Sep 18, 2023State Rep. Bob Young must wear GPS monitor to leave jail
A judge ordered jailed state Rep. Bob Young to wear a GPS monitor as a condition of his release Wednesday morning after the lawmaker pleaded not guilty to violating a protection order.
Visiting Judge Edward O’Farrell agreed to release the Republican from Green after two nights in jail on his own recognizance with the monitoring in place.
Young, wearing an orange jail uniform, appeared in Barberton Municipal Court via closed-circuit television from the Summit County Jail where he has been held on the new first-degree misdemeanor charge since early Tuesday. His legal counsel did not object to the conditions of his release laid out by O’Farrell. Young was mostly quiet during the arraignment, speaking only when spoken to.

Already facing two first-degree misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and assault, Young is accused of violating a restraining order preventing him from contacting family members.
Young left voicemails using his cellphone at 10:35 p.m., 10:47 p.m. and 11:01 p.m. Saturday on the landline of a family member protected by the order, according to an affidavit for arrest obtained by the Akron Beacon Journal.
Tuscarawas County sheriff's deputies arrested Young at 10:15 p.m. Monday at a home there, booked him into jail and released him at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
A pre-trial hearing on all three charges remains scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.
A Barberton judge issued the restraining order in early July just days after two alleged assaults involving family members led to Young's first arrest.
Young is accused of slapping his wife at 1 a.m. on July 7 during a private party held his home after a GOP fundraiser earlier that night. A witness statement from another woman dated Aug. 8 alleges Young also "struck" her at the same July 7 event, according to records obtained by the newspaper.
Several hours later on July 7, Young allegedly charged a family member to gain entry into a home where his wife and child fled, according to police. The relative, defending himself, pushed the lawmaker back through the glass storm door.
Young also has pleaded not guilty to the original charges.
